Before photography became my primary artistic language, graphic design was an important part of my creative life for more than forty years. I graduated from The Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design and worked as a graphic designer and creative director in the Soviet Union, Italy, and later in the United States. Graphic design taught me how to find structure within complexity and understand the relationship between image, space, and typography. It taught me that simplicity can make an idea clearer. Photography is a different medium, but I still have the same visual way of thinking when deciding what to photograph and how to frame it.
